Standard Chartered Bank Botswana first opened in Botswana in Francistown in 1897 but for a short time only. However Francistown was reopened and raised to a full branch in 1956 with others following (notably Lobatse in 1958, Mahalapye in 1963 and Gaborone in 1964).

Standard Chartered Bank Botswana Limited became a locally incorporated Public Company in 1975 and currently has 25% of its shares listed on the Botswana Stock Exchange.

Today, Standard Chartered Bank Botswana operates out of a network of 16 branches and agencies (11 branches, 5 agencies) in addition to a Loan Centre and Customer Call Centre. With its branch network and large force of Direct Sales Representatives Standard Chartered is able to service both retail and wholesale customers countrywide through its Consumer Banking and Wholesale Banking divisions.

The Consumer Banking division has established itself as one of the top retail banking divisions in Botswana by offering a wide range of products and being a market leader in the provision of banking services. The division is comprised of 6 business units: Shared Distribution, Wealth Management, Business and Financial Services, Sales and Credit Cards, Unsecured Lending, Secured Lending which comprises Auto Loans and Mortgage Loans, Marketing Services and Service Quality, as well as Credit Risk Management.

Wholesale Banking comprises Client Relations which handles corporate cash management , trade services and credit facilities and Global Markets which handles Foreign Exchange, Currency Options, Government Bonds, High Yield Deposits as well as other liquidity management products. Wholesale Banking has established itself as a corporate service provider of choice in the Botswana market, offering a wide range of advisory, hedging and transactional services to corporate entities and being able to utilize the Standard Chartered's global network of expertise in structured transactions, fixed income, currency market and research.
