Ngila Stevenson
International Graduate 2005
hired into Wholesale Banking, Kenya

What does Wholesale Banking at Standard Chartered involve?
We provide the highest service standards, tailor-made solutions and a results-focused strategy to corporates and institutions, enabling them to realise their aspirations sooner by managing everything from cross-border trade to investment and advisory.

What's so special about Wholesale Banking?
Our unique footprint across Asia, Africa and the Middle East, solutions-driven thinking and the depth of our on-the-ground expertise - these enable us to bring our clients' strategies to fruition.

What does Standard Chartered look for in a graduate?
We look for graduates who have an international mindset, a hunger for knowledge, solution-driven thinking and are responsive. This coupled with a passion to make a positive impact both on our clients and the Bank in general.

What are the opportunities for graduates at Standard Chartered?
Every day Standard Chartered presents new and unique opportunities. I joined the International Graduate Programme in Kenya and was given a number of assignments in core parts of the business as part of my training. This also included an international induction programme hosted in Singapore and a number of e-learning courses and master classes.

International graduates are called upon to participate in a number of Bank projects, both locally and internationally. An example of one of the many projects I have been involved in was to identify how Consumer Banking can most effectively penetrate and dominate the key value chains in the Consumer Banking industries in Kenya, Zimbabwe, Thailand, and Zambia.

At the moment, I am involved in an exciting but challenging project whose objective is to migrate our clients into Single Customer Identifier (SCI) across 13 African countries.

What do you like best about your job/rotations?
Having joined as an international graduate, I now work as a Manager in Sales Process & Marketing, Client Relationships Africa, based in London, UK. My key focus is to support the Co-Head of Wholesale Banking Africa in all aspects of sales process management and marketing activities across African countries.

The best part of my role is the opportunity to focus on delivering results across the whole Africa region, through directly influencing the P&L or looking at leadership interventions. This role also gives me exposure at the most senior level within the organisation, hence sharpening my leadership skills early on in my career.

What surprised you most when you joined Standard Chartered?
Young people in very senior leadership positions within the Bank - a clear indication that the bank trusts, exposes and stretches the young mind.

Do you have any key messages for candidates thinking of joining us?
If you are client focused and thinking of an international career full of challenges that will stretch your potential, then Standard Chartered is the right place to be.

What is the best background/skill to be successful at Standard Chartered?
Our core values are creative, responsive, international, trustworthy and courageous.
If you can live our values and combine them with a hunger for knowledge and focus, then you will be successful at Standard Chartered.
