Richard Meddings
Group Finance Director

Richard Meddings was appointed as Group Finance Director of Standard Chartered PLC in November 2006, having joined the Board as a Group Executive Director in November 2002. He is based in London and is responsible for Finance, Group Corporate Treasury, Risk and Group Corporate Development.
Immediately prior to his appointment as Group Finance Director, Richard had been Group Executive Director for growth and governance across Africa, the Middle East, Pakistan, Europe and the Americas. Before that he was Group Executive Director with responsibility for Risk, Group Special Assets Management and Legal & Compliance.
Before joining Standard Chartered, Richard was Chief Operating Officer, Barclays Private Clients and prior to that he was Group Financial Controller at Barclays PLC. Richard was Group Finance Director of Woolwich PLC before the acquisition of Woolwich PLC by Barclays PLC. In this role his responsibilities included Finance, Strategy, Investor Relations, Risk, Compliance and Treasury.
Richard is Chairman of ‘Seeing is Believing' a Standard Chartered community investment project which prevents avoidable blindness for thousands of individuals and communities around the world. Over USD17m has been raised to date which is invested in 35 projects in 20 countries to cure and prevent blindness. Seeing is Believing is now seeking to raise a further USD20m to support comprehensive eye care facilities in slums across the developing world.
Richard qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse in 1983 and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. He attended Wolverhampton Grammar School, following which he graduated from Exeter College, Oxford with a MA (Hons) in Modern History.
He became a Non Executive Director of 3i Group plc in September, 2008 and is a member of the Governing Council of the International Chamber of Commerce, United Kingdom. Previously he was a member of the Indo British Partnership Network from April, 2005 until August, 2007.
Richard is married with three children and his interests include football, cricket and golf. He was born in 1958.
