Manager, Performance, Reward and Benefits - Specialist Functions

Me
I graduated from Renmin University of China and joined the Human Resources International Graduate Programme in 2009. I was previously on a six month internship with Standard Chartered in London and this gave me the exposure to the different parts of the Bank. My Line Manager was truly inspiring; I had the confidence to stretch beyond my comfort zone, all the while knowing he was there to support and guide me in the right direction. I was also attracted to the tremendous opportunities for development across business and functions, and countries.
My opportunities
During the two year programme I completed rotations in Talent Acquisition and Human Resource (HR) Relationship Management, and a specific business rotation in Transaction Banking. I also went to Chennai in India where I spent some time in our HR Shared Service Centre, which is our one-stop centre for all HR related requests. Completing these rotations not only gave me the hard and soft skills required to be successful in a professional HR function, it also gave me an excellent opportunity to build my network, both locally and globally. What impressed me the most was the support I received from my Line Managers. They challenged me, but also guided and encouraged me, ultimately they made sure my development gave me the foundation I needed to achieve my goals.
I was also attracted to the diversity at Standard Chartered. As an International Graduate from China, I’ve had many opportunities to meet and interact with other graduates not only from China, but also from Hong Kong, India, Korea, Singapore and the UK. When we get together at the global induction held in Kuala Lumpur and at various academic training and projects, we share ideas and different perspectives that contribute to an enriching and rewarding experience. I’ve built great relationships with my peers and I know I can always reach out to them should I need help with anything. The programme also offers early exposure to senior management from across the network, providing an excellent opportunity to learn from the best.
My future
I’m very proud of the Bank’s strong commitment to the communities we’re in. For example, our ‘Living with HIV’ initiative conducts programmes to promote preventative actions for avoidable or curable diseases. I try to do my part as the ‘Living with HIV’ champion for my team, helping to educate my colleagues and encourage greater volunteering in the various programmes. When I think about the company I work for, it’s not just about what they offer in terms of career development. Equally important is working for an organisation with sound values and beliefs. I’ve found this at Standard Chartered and it’s certainly where I have a bright future.
