Specialist Functions International Graduate programme

Our customer and client facing teams couldn't do their jobs without the support of our Specialist Functions. They provide the infrastructure critical to our day-to-day business, and the expertise needed to shape the future of the Bank.

Whether it's supporting our 85,000 staff, managing our 2,500 buildings or protecting our assets worth in excess of USD517 billion, our Specialist Functions ensure the efficient operation of the Bank.

About the programme

This programme is offered in three key areas - Corporate Real Estate Services, Group Internal Audit and Human Resources.

On this programme you will complete focused rotations and be supported by close and regular interaction with senior leaders. We will provide:

  • Real life experience that will help you to hit the ground running
  • A deep appreciation for the international nature of our business through day-to-day interactions with cross border teams
  • Exposure to different cultures and new ways of thinking through our global teams
  • Career acceleration through an intense focus on strictly relevant areas.

Programme streams

Graduates can select from one of three Specialist Functions - Corporate Real Estate Services (CRES), Group Internal Audit (GIA) or Human Resources.

The programme structure will vary depending on which function you select. However, all graduates will:

  • Attend the International Induction Programme (IIP) held in Kuala Lumpur
  • Attend an induction specific to your chosen function following the IIP
  • Undertake an 18-month programme of rotations to build breadth of knowledge across your chosen function. 

You'll also be supported with:

  • A dedicated Graduate Development Manager to guide you through the programme
  • Regular one-on-one reviews designed to track your progress and performance
  • A mentor to help guide you and help bring their expertise to bear on your development and day-to-day decision-making.

Corporate Real Estate Servicesshow/hide

Corporate Real Estate Services (CRES) develops, maintains and protects all aspects of the Bank's infrastructure and corporate real estate portfolio for the benefit of both staff and customers. In addition to Asset Management, Project Management and Facilities Management, CRES is also responsible for Security, Business Continuity, and Health Safety & the Environment.

CRES manages a portfolio of more than 2,500 buildings in 71 markets across the globe.

Rotations:

Rotation 1 - CRES Operations
During this rotation, you will gain an understanding of the role of the Country Operations team, developing skills around transaction management, project management and facilities management, as well as CRES core activities.

Rotation 2 - CRES Risk
During this rotation you will be assigned to one of the three CRES Risk teams - Business Continuity Management, Health Safety & the Environment or Security - where you will learn fundamentals associated with governance, approval and management processes.

Rotation 3 - CRES Real Estate
Build knowledge and skills around the key CRES customers, global real estate markets, and the Project Management Office.

Rotation 4 - Project
Assigned to a live CRES project to build skills and knowledge in areas specific to the project along with general project management and budgetary understanding.

Group Internal Auditshow/hide

Group Internal Audit (GIA) brings a disciplined and systematic approach to evaluating and improving the effectiveness of the risk management, control and corporate governance process. The team provides independent assurance to the Audit & Risk Committee and to senior management to ensure risks associated with the Bank's business are identified, appropriate controls are in place, and that the controls operate as intended.

The team works in partnership with the business as a third line of assurance after Business and Country Risk.

Rotations:

During the programme you will complete a long rotation in your specified area of Audit. You will then complete two shorter rotations in different areas to gain breadth of audit experience. You will be sponsored by the Head of your Audit business area and be assigned a senior mentor.

Human Resourcesshow/hide

Human Resources partners with the business to provide valuable people-related services to drive sustained high performance. Our focus on attracting, engaging and retaining quality people who share our commitment enables us to collectively drive the business and achieve our goals.

With 85,000 people representing 129 nationalities, we have a widespread and very diverse team of people to work with. The team provides services covering Talent Acquisition, Learning & Talent Development, Employee Relations, Engagement, Performance Management, Recognition and Reward.

Rotations:

Rotation 1 - Country Human Resources
Supporting a senior HR Relationship Manager, you will be exposed to a number of areas, including performance management, reward, talent identification and development and team facilitation.

Rotation 2 - Specialist Human Resources
During this rotation, you'll work in one of our global product areas. These areas focus on the strategy and governance of key Human Resources product offerings including Talent Acquisition, Learning & Development, Performance, Reward & Benefits, Employer Brand & Culture and Organisation Development.

Rotation 3 - Business Human Resources
During this rotation you'll be assigned to either the Wholesale Banking or Consumer Banking Human Resources team to gain a true understanding of how Human Resources supports the business to achieve its goals.

Qualities for successshow/hide

Corporate Real Estate Services

If you're future focused, able to provide a creative response to here-and-now challenges, and have excellent listening and communication skills you'll make a great member of the CRES team. You're passionate about the built environment, but at the same time you possess excellent numeracy and analytical skills.

Group Internal Audit

As an Audit professional you'll be analytical and detail-oriented, and able to integrate information easily producing concise summaries. You'll have a strong commercial sense and enjoy tackling challenges systematically. You're great at building relationships, a talent that will hold you in good stead as you travel to different countries within our footprint.

Human Resources

Human Resources graduates will have a sense of responsibility and core values aligned to our own that guide your interactions with others. You are a strategic thinker who has the ability to make connections between our business objectives and what we should be doing from a people perspective to support those goals. You're also great at building relationships, easily able to identify and cultivate potential in others.

Requirements vary depending on your chosen Specialist Function.

Corporate Real Estate Services

    • An undergraduate degree or postgraduate qualification in a related discipline (e.g. Engineering, Real Estate, Architecture, Surveying, Building Management or Environmental Studies)
    • The legal right to work in the country for which you are applying
    • Fluency in English; a second language is considered beneficial.

    Group Internal Audit

    • An undergraduate degree, any discipline
    • The legal right to work in the country for which you are applying
    • Fluency in English; a second language is considered beneficial.

Human Resources

    • An undergraduate degree, a degree in Human Resources is preferred though not essential
    • The legal right to work in the country for which you are applying
    • Fluency in English; a second language is considered beneficial.

1. Online application
The first step is to complete an online application, where you'll need to tell us your:

  • personal details
  • academic background
  • work experience.

2. Online assessment
You'll then be asked to complete a series of online assessments. You need to pass each one to progress to the next stage.

Numerical Reasoning Test
This test measures numerical reasoning skills in a business context, such as tables and charts typically found in reports and the financial press.

Logical Reasoning Test
This test measures your logical reasoning abilities, which is important when solving problems and analysing information.

Talent Assessment
This assessment is designed to assess your behavioural preferences and help us understand your potential to thrive within the Bank.

We employ a policy of re-testing and may require you to repeat any or all of our online assessments at a later stage in the application process. This re-testing will take place at one of our testing centres.

3. First interview
Following success in the online tests you may be invited to a telephone or face-to-face interview. This 60-minute interview is your opportunity to tell us about your achievements and strengths, and to ask us questions.

4. Final interview and assessments
The format of the day's activities varies from country to country and you will be told beforehand what you will be doing. It typically includes:

Face-to-face interview
During this 60-minute interview, you'll need to display your communication skills as you answer more challenging questions about yourself, your understanding of the Bank and your reasons for choosing Wholesale Banking.

Group Exercise
You'll need to demonstrate how you can communicate a specific point of view under pressure whilst working in a group.

Presentation
You may be asked to give a presentation. If so, you'll receive a topic and all the preparation material you'll need on the day.

5. Final decision
After the process is complete, we'll let you know of our decision within 72 hours.

How do I submit my application?show/hide

All applications should be submitted online. We do not process applications received in any other format.

Do I need any work experience?show/hide

We do not expect graduates to have any prior work experience. It is only one of many factors that will be considered during the application process. We assess you based on your ability to demonstrate talents and skills gained through other life experiences, such as travel, study, research, or involvement in community affairs.

Do I need a background in Finance?show/hide

We welcome applications from candidates with a variety of degree disciplines. Entry requirements for the different graduate programmes differ, so please refer to the individual programme pages for more information.

If I’m not based in the country I apply to, can I still apply?show/hide

You may apply for the programme from anywhere in the world, as long as you have the legal right to work in the country for which you are applying.

Will Standard Chartered apply for a work permit for me?show/hide

We cannot arrange work permits on your behalf. As a minimum requirement for all graduate programmes, you must have the legal right to work full-time in the country to which you're applying. You'll be asked to verify this as part of the application process.

Do you sponsor graduates for further education?show/hide

Graduates who take part in the Wholesale Bank International Graduate Programme will be sponsored to undertake the CFA Level 1 qualification.

What's the deadline for applying?show/hide

For the majority of programmes you can apply online from September. Each programme has a different closing date, please check the relevant programme page for more information. We review each application on receipt and make offers throughout the year. We don't leave it to the last minute and nor should you.

When do the graduate programmes start?show/hide

Start dates vary by programme. The majority of graduate programmes start between June and August each year. All graduates must have commenced by 1 September 2012, the official start date for graduate programmes.
