Standard Chartered Bank Ghana Limited has been operating in Ghana since 1896, and is one of the oldest businesses in the country. We opened our first branch in Accra in June 1896, and our main business then was the distribution of silver coins, of which we were the sole supplier.
In 1902, another branch was opened in Sekondi. An agency was also opened in Obuasi in 1905 (and raised to the status of a branch in 1909) followed by the Kumasi branch in 1906. Within ten years of commencing operations in Ghana, Standard Chartered Bank (then known as British Bank of West Africa) expanded its network to cover most of the main business centres in the Gold Coast (as Ghana was called then).
At Ghana's independence in 1957, we changed our name from Bank of British West Africa to Bank of West Africa and launched an expansion programme which saw the number of branches grow from 30 at the end of 1958 to 112 in 1965. The bank went through many evolutionary changes, finally acquiring its present name, Standard Chartered Bank Ghana Limited, on January 1, 1985.
As one of the first financial institutions to be involved in financing import and export trade in products like cocoa, gold, bauxite, and timber, we played a unique role, not only in monetising the economy and playing the role of the Central Bank, but also in laying the foundations for a formal banking industry in Ghana. The Bank is listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange, and has consistently remained the highest-priced stock on the local bourse.
The Bank is trusted across its network for its standard of governance and its commitment to making a difference in the communities in which it operates. It has remained committed to being The Right Partner - Leading by Example to all its stakeholders, and is leading the way as the best international Bank in Ghana as well as in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
