Hemen Shah assumes office as CEO Standard Chartered Ghana
2 January 2009, Accra - Hemen Shah, Standard Chartered’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Ghana and Area General Manager, West Africa has assumed office, with the responsibility of growing the Bank’s impressive business in Ghana and across the area having already received the necessary regulatory approvals.
Hemen who was introduced to the staff at a town-hall meeting last November was the former CEO for Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) Tanzania. A position he held from March 2004. Under his leadership, SCB Tanzania’s trading profit more than doubled. The Bank also received recognition for being the Best Bank, 2005 & 2006 (Euromoney) and 2004, 2005 & 2007 (Banker Awards), and also the Best Employer, 2005 (Employers Association of Tanzania).
Hemen joined Standard Chartered in 2002 as the Group Head of Strategy. He was responsible for developing the Standard Chartered Group’s corporate strategy, including evaluating potential acquisitions and identifying new markets for entry. A role he successfully discharged, leading to the development of Standard Chartered’s current strategic intent, after which he moved to SCB Tanzania.
Commenting on his new role, Hemen said;

Last November, Hemen was also introduced to a cross section of the Bank’s stakeholders, including customers, regulators, the banking fraternity, government officials and the diplomatic corps at a reception which also served as a farewell event for his predecessor, Ebby Essoka, who has been appointed to head the Bank’s business in South Africa, one of Standard Chartered’s strategic growth markets in Africa.
