Standard Chartered brings benefit to over 5000 deprived school kids
Provides over 5000 seating spaces for 26 schools across 7 regions under the Future Leaders Programme in support of Ghana@50
Accra, January 15, 2009 - Standard Chartered continues to deliver on its promise to distribute 5000 dual desks to 50 (signifying Ghana@50) deprived schools across the length and breadth of Ghana under its Schools Desk Project which forms part of the “Standard Chartered – Ghana@50 Future Leaders Programme”. The Bank has so far distributed 2600 dual desks to 26 deprived schools across 7 regions in the country. This translates into seats for over 5000 pupils or students.
The “Standard Chartered - Ghana@50 Future Leaders Programme which covers the areas of Health and Education is focused on the development of future leaders to ensure that the country accomplishes its various developmental milestones which will be showcased at Ghana@100.
Commenting, Hemen Shah, CEO Ghana, and Area General Manager, West Africa of the Bank said:
Last month the Bank invited 18 SME customers to the fair. This is the third consecutive year Standard Chartered Bank has taken its SME customers to the annual SME EXPO. The EXPO offered the customers from Ghana the chance to participate in forums with Asian suppliers and customers, obtain market advice, negotiate better trade deals, seal dealership contracts and build valuable business ties with over 100 SMEs from around the world.

The 26 beneficiary schools covered under the project so far include Akotoshie School, Pro Link Danfa School, Martey Tsuru Presby Primary and Junior High School, Korpehem D/A School, Kasseh Primary and Junior High School and Korle Gonno R/C Boys School - Greater Accra region; Nintin R/C Primary, Subin Camp D/A Primary, Ejuratia L/A Junior High School and Mim-Pipie R/C Primary School - Ashanti region; FOO AME ZION Primary, Zagyuri Anglican Junior High School and Wovugu Primary School - Northern region; Datuko Primary school, Namoranteng Primary school and Chuchuliga Junior High School - Upper East region; Kanga Primary and Chaggu Primary - Upper West region; Adoagyiri Methodist Junior High School, Nkyenkyene Presby Junior High School, Ayim L/A Primary and Asempaneye Community Junior High School - Eastern region; Poase Cement L/A Primary School, Akpafu-Mempeasem Primary School, Dabala Primary School, Adzato R/C Primary School – Volta region.
Under the Schools Desk Project, Standard Chartered is distributing 5000 dual desks to 50 (signifying Ghana@50) deprived schools across the length and breadth of Ghana. Each beneficiary institution will receive 100 desks. This translates into seats for 200 pupils or students in each of the 50 schools.
In the area of health, Standard Chartered, under its Nets-for-Life initiative, is distributing 49,500 Long-Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets (LLITNs) to prevent Malaria and support an awareness creation campaign against the disease and its agents.
Standard Chartered Bank has over the years won praise and acclaim for its community initiatives. This has been through its core and ongoing initiatives in the areas of curable sight restoration, HIV/AIDS and the award winning 100 Wells for 100 Communities Project through which the Bank provided a total of 100 bore-holes to an equal number of communities across the country between 2004 and 2006.
