Standard Chartered celebrates Malaria Week
…Staff engage in clean up at La Beach
Accra, April 26 2008: Staff in Standard Chartered have celebrated Malaria Week which coincided with the global celebration of Malaria Day on Friday April 25, 2008.
The climax of the engaging week was an employee volunteering activity which presented a three-pronged opportunity to help fight Malaria, save the environment and to donate cleaning implements (about 30rakes, 10 wheelbarrows, and others) to the caretakers of the La Beach in Accra.
Scores of staff assembled as a stronger “force-for-good” in the fight against Malaria and cleared over a 3km stretch of beach front off silt and plastic waste.
Making the presentation, Nii Okai Nunoo, Area Head of Corporate Affairs said: “As the pioneer bank in Ghana and having been adjudged at one time Ghana’s “Most Socially Responsible Bank”, we believe we have a right to be concerned about the environment. In leading the way in our environmental efforts, we aim to reduce the threat which Malaria poses to our socio-economic development as a nation. That is one of our contributions to the sustainable development of Ghana.”
Earlier in the week, a photo exhibition of the bank’s Nets for Life initiative was mounted in all 19 branches of the Bank. Nets for Life is Standard Chartered’s ambitious Africa-wide community partnership initiative, aimed at reducing the impact of malaria in 16 countries including Ghana.
The three-year Africa-wide USD12million initiative is designed to reduce the transmission of the malarial parasite through improved preventive measures and aims to distribute more than 1 million Long Lasting Insecticide-Treated Nets (LLITNs) by the end of 2008.
It is important to note that, in Ghana, under our Standard Chartered – Ghana@50 Future Leaders Program, Nets for Life is one of our legacy contributions to the Ghana@50 celebrations and through which we are committed to distributing 49,500 LLITNs. The initial focus has been on the three regions in the north of Ghana, specifically the Northern, Upper West and Upper East Regions.
