Standard Chartered Schools Desk Project continues to deliver on its promise
Presentation of 300 dual desks to benefit more than 600 school-children in the beneficiary-institutions
Accra, June 24, 2008 - Standard Chartered Bank Ghana has made a presentation of 300 dual desks to three schools in the Northern and Upper West regions namely Namoranteng Primary, Datuku Primary and Foo Zion Primary Schools under its Schools Desk Project which forms part of the Bank’s “Standard Chartered - Ghana@50 Future Leaders Programme” launched last year.
The “Standard Chartered-Ghana@50 Future Leaders Programme” is focused on the development of future leaders to ensure that the country achieves it various developmental milestones which will be showcased at Ghana @100. It covers the area of health and education.
A delegation from the Bank, led by Kofi Fumey, Head of Marketing, West Africa visited the three schools to formally present the desks to the school authorities and the students.
Presenting the desks, Kofi Fumey said: “As the Right Partner to the people of Ghana, Standard Chartered remains focused on delivering on its commitment to its communities as pledged under the Standard Chartered -Ghana @50 Future Leaders Programme. This is one of the legacies that the Bank is contributing to the nation’s development.”
In all three schools, the heads of the various institutions supported by the chiefs, elders and members of the local council and members of the Unit Committee in addition to the students were full of praise for the Bank.
Commenting, Mr. Francis Ayaaba, District Director of Education in the Talensi-Nabdam District said: “The entire community is delighted and we’re indeed grateful to Standard Chartered Bank for the desks. These will go a long way to inspire the students to excel in their chosen fields of endeavour.”
Under the Schools Desk Project, Standard Chartered Bank is distributing 5000 dual desks; valued at GHS230,000 to 50(signifying Ghana@50) deprived schools across the length and breadth of Ghana. Each beneficiary institution will receive 100 desks. On the whole, this translates into seats for 10000 students in 50 schools across the country. So far 10 schools have benefited from the project, with some more expected to benefit before the end of this year.
In addition to the desks, and as part of the Bank’s “Reading for Growth” initiative, all three schools will be supplied with 10 copies of the Junior Graphic on a weekly basis. These copies will be made available in the libraries and reading rooms to students of the beneficiary-institutions over a period of one year.
Standard Chartered Bank has over the years won praise and acclaim for its community initiatives. This has been through its core and ongoing initiatives in areas of curable sight restoration, HIV/AIDS, the award winning “100 Wells for 100 Communities Project” through which the Bank has provided a total of 100 bore-holes to an equal number of communities across the country between 2004 and 2006. About a month ago the Bank as part of its World Environment Day activities planted 2000 trees across the country in support of the global call to kick out CO2.
