Standard Chartered’s Schools Desk Project Brings Benefit to Northern Ghana
Presentation of 500 dual desks to five needy schools in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions to benefit more than 1000 school children under Future Leaders Programme in support of Ghana@50
Accra, October 10 2008 - Standard Chartered has made a presentation of five hundred dual desks to five schools namely Kangba R/C Primary and Chaggu Primary, Zagyuri Junior High School and Wovogu Anglican Primary, and Chuchuliga Junior High School in the Upper West, Northern and Upper East regions respectively under its Schools Desk Project which forms part of the “Standard Chartered – Ghana@50 Future Leaders Programme”.
The “Standard Chartered - Ghana@50 Future Leaders Programme which covers the areas of Health and Education is focused on the development of future leaders to ensure that the country accomplishes its various developmental milestones which will be showcased at Ghana@100.
Making the presentation, Magnus Noamesi, Area Manager (Ashanti & Northern) of the Bank said: “We in Standard Chartered are actively engaged with our communities, having rolled out projects like the award-winning 100 Wells for 100 Communities, our USD442,400 Comprehensive Eye Care Program in the Eastern Region of Ghana and this Schools Desk Project which forms part of our Standard Chartered – Ghana@50 Future Leaders Program.. We will continue to lead the way in Ghana’s economic rebirth by supporting education, community development and developing our people.”
The Bank’s team included Magnus Noamesi, Area Manager (Ashanti & Northern), Kwabena Asiama, Branch Support and Service Manager, SCB Tamale and Ebow Quayson, Associate Director for Financial Institutions and Development Organisations.
Present at the handing-over ceremonies were dignitaries including Rt. Revd. Emmanuel Arongo, Anglican Bishop of Tamale, Naa Seidu, Bawala naa (Chief of Kangba), Adam Abukari, Chief of Wovogu, Mr. Kwaku Opoku, General Manager of schools, Mr. Ankoruk Thomas, Deputy Director of Education, Chuchuliga, Unit Committee members, Assemblymen, teachers and the school kids.
Mr. Akanligba Edward Adekatoa, Headmaster of Chuchuliga JHS, Madam Carolina Didera, Headmistress of Wovogu Anglican Primary, Miss Francisca Awuni, Headmistress of Zagyuri JHS, Mr Salifu Iddrisu, Wa West District Director of Education and Madam Dominica Dassah, Wa East District Director of Education received the desks on behalf of their respective schools.
“I am proud to mention that the furniture has come at the most opportune time, for 90% of the pupils in this community were sitting on the floor. This was actually affecting effective teaching and learning including the health status of pupils. I say a very big thank you to Standard Chartered Bank and for this immeasurable kind gesture.”

Under the Schools Desk Project, Standard Chartered is distributing 5000 dual desks 50 (signifying Ghana@50) deprived schools across the length and breadth of Ghana. Each beneficiary institution will receive 100 desks. This translates into seats for 200 pupils or students in each of the 50 schools.
In the area of health, Standard Chartered, under its Nets-for-Life initiative, is distributing 49,500 Long-Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets (LLITNs) to prevent Malaria and support an awareness creation campaign against the disease and its agents.
Standard Chartered Bank has over the years won praise and acclaim for its community initiatives. This has been through its core and ongoing initiatives in the areas of curable sight restoration, HIV/AIDS and the award winning 100 Wells for 100 Communities Project through which the Bank provided a total of 100 bore-holes to an equal number of communities across the country between 2004 and 2006.
