Jogja School Rehabilitation and Scholarship Program with Sampoerna Foundation

In July 2008, Standard Chartered Bank Indonesia's CEO, Simon Morris, handed over five rehabilitated primary school buildings to the government of Yogyakarta special territory on this highly populated Java island. The school buildings were once flattened to the ground by an earthquake in 2006. Now more than 700 students can leave their emergency classrooms in bamboo shelters and return to proper class rooms. This is a second phase of our assistance to the victims of Yogyakarta earthquake after earlier this year we gave 500 scholarships to the students ranging from elementary up to university level for a period of 3 to 4 years each. More than USD 430k was channelled for the scholarships and school rehabilitation works through Sampoerna Foundation. Simon said, "This year marks 145 years of our commitment to the Indonesian market, and through this assistance programme we also show our commitment to be the right partner for the community."
