The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China first opened a branch office in the capital city of Phnom Penh in 1954. The Bank was forced to close in 1973 when the then government mandated all foreign banks to leave the country. In March 1992 after the long and bitter civil war in Cambodia (known locally as Kampuchea), Standard Chartered opened a representative office in Phnom Penh. Our presence was enlarged when we expanded to a full branch in February 1999.
Currently, the branch offers a full range of banking services and is the first bank in Cambodia with SWIFT capability (SWIFT Code: SCBLKHP2). In addition to domestic/international payments, cash management and trade services, the branch also provides funding to network clients. The currency of Cambodia is the Riel (SWIFT Code KHR). The Cambodian economy is almost wholly "Dollarised". Local currency is used to facilitate the payment of local taxes and public utilities and petty trading. Although the country is dollar based, the Riel is freely convertible.
