Lao People's Democratic Republic (Laos) is a landlocked country within the Greater Mekong region of Indo-china, to the north east of Thailand. In 1986 Laos began to move away from a centrally planned economy with the introduction of the New Economic Mechanism (NEM), which involved decentralising control and encouraging private enterprise. Starting from a very low base, growth has averaged 7.5% since 1988. However, being landlocked and with a very weak infrastructure - no railroads, a rudimentary road system and limited external and internal telecommunications - the country does not have a competitive edge over its neighbouring countries. The economy will continue to depend much on international aid for the foreseeable future. We can offer offshore accounts and remittances for non-governmental organisations. The unit of currency in Laos is the KIP (SWIFT Code LAK).
