Sunil Mittal Sunil Mittal was appointed as an independent Non-Executive Director of Standard Chartered PLC on 1 August 2007.
He is Chairman and Group CEO of Bharti Enterprises, a group based in New Delhi, India that he founded with modest capital investment in 1976. The main business of the group is conducted in the telecom sector with other interests in retail and wholesale, communication and media devices, insurance and financial services, agri-business, realty and software/BPO. Bharti Airtel Ltd, the flagship company, is among the top three in India with respect to market capitalisation (over US$40billion).
Sunil is also President of the Confederation of Indian Industry and sits on the following boards and councils: Prime Minister's Council on Trade and Industry; India Advisory Council of the Harvard Business School; the International Advisory Board of the Center for the Advanced Study of India (CASI); University of Pennsylvania; Global GSM Association; Singapore-India Partnership Foundation and the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management (Lucknow) and the Indian Institute of Technology (Mumbai).
In 2007 the Government of India awarded Sunil the Padma Bhushan, one of its highest civilian awards.
Sunil is an alumnus of the Harvard Business School, USA, an honorary Fellow of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineers, and has been conferred the degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) by the G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology. He is also the Honorary Consul General of the Republic of Seychelles in New Delhi, India.
