Dr. Tim Miller
Director, Property,
Research & Assurance and
Chairman, Standard Chartered Korea
Tim joined Standard Chartered Bank (the “Bank”) in May 2000 as Group Head of Human Resources (“HR”) and was appointed a Director of the Bank in December 2004.
Under his leadership, the HR function underwent a significant transformation, with the establishment of centres of expertise and the global HR Shared Service Centre in Chennai, India in 2002, both of which were critical in building a world-class HR capability. Focusing on employee engagement and building upon individuals’ strengths, the Bank’s approach supports the business through the integrated application of people solutions.
In March 2006, Tim was appointed Director, People, Property and Assurance, assuming responsibility for the HR; Corporate Real Estate, Corporate Secretariat, Legal, Compliance & Assurance, Internal Audit and Global Research functions. Tim was appointed non-executive Chairman of Standard Chartered Korea in September 2007, with responsibility for growth and governance in Korea. He is also accountable for the Bank’s environment programme and is the Chairman of the Banks’ Environment Committee.
Following an increase in Tim’s responsibilities in Korea, in January 2010, his portfolio was streamlined to exclude HR, and renamed Property, Research and Assurance (“PRA”). Together, the PRA functions play a critical role in driving the Bank’s strategy of strong organic growth, supplemented by selective acquisitions, and ensuring exemplary standards of governance and ethics. Reflecting the need to build scalability and align activities to the Bank’s risk appetite, the operating and governance models of the assurance functions have been extensively refined, providing a robust control environment during a period of unprecedented growth at the Bank. This has also ensured the Bank has been in a strong position to address the increasing regulatory oversight of the financial sector in the UK and globally.
Prior to joining the Bank, Tim held a number of senior HR positions at GlaxoSmithKline. He has a Bachelors degree in History and Economics, a Master of Letters degree and an MBA from the University of Stirling. In 2007, he completed a Doctorate in Business Administration from Nottingham Business School.
In addition to his responsibilities at the Bank, Tim is a Non-Executive Director of Michael Page International plc, a Vice President, Organisation and Resourcing, at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (“CIPD”), Chairman of the Governing Body, School of Oriental & African Studies (“SOAS”), and a Member of the School Advisory Board, and a Special Professor of Strategy, at Nottingham University Business School.
A keen sports fan, Tim enjoys rugby and cricket, and classical music.
