Overview
Standard Chartered Nigeria opened
its first branch on 15 September 1999 as a wholly owned
subsidiary of Standard Chartered PLC after the advent of
the present nascent democracy in Nigeria. Historically,
Standard Chartered's first entry into Nigeria was in 1894
as Bank of British West Africa Limited. In 1965, Standard
Bank acquired the Bank of British West Africa Limited, which
had over 60 branches in Nigeria. Owing to the indigenisation
decree, Standard Chartered had to divest its shares in Standard
Bank and in 1979 the Bank's name was changed to First Bank
of Nigeria Limited. Standard Chartered fully divested our
interests in First Bank in 1996.
Standard Chartered Nigeria's Head Office is located in Lagos,
the commercial centre of Nigeria and focuses its marketing
efforts primarily on global and domestic corporates. The
currency of Nigeria is the Nigerian Naira (SWIFT code NGN).
