Employee volunteering

Liliana Parra with a young child from an HIV/AIDS foundationOne of the ways our employees engage with our business is through volunteering. Our employees have a history of volunteering - through fundraising activities and getting directly involved in some of our regional and local projects.

In 2006 we formalised our employees' efforts through our global Employee Volunteering programme. The aim of the programme is to make even more people aware of the benefits of volunteering and measure its contribution to community investment.

  • The scheme provides employees with an additional two days leave each year for voluntary work.
  • Under the reward level of our programme, employees who demonstrate outstanding performance are rewarded with an additional five days leave, sponsored by Standard Chartered, to spend on a project that tie in with our community strategy.
  • Under the programme, employees take part in a wide range of activities and projects worldwide.
  • In 2006 Michele Gourgey, a Director of Global Corporate Sales, worked with Sight Savers International as a volunteer consultant. Using her business experience, she and her team completed a foreign exchange hedging review to help Sight Savers develop their treasury policy.
  • In Kenya, staff volunteered to help renovate the Kwa Watototo Children's Home in Nairobi - they also raised funds to repair the roof.
  • In Indonesia, over 175 employees volunteered to support those whose homes were impacted by the floods. They volunteered in the Command Centre, purchasing and distributing goods as well as helping with the evacuation process.
  • In 2006, Nichaporn Udomkoon, Standard Chartered Thailand, assisted a country HIV Champion training Standard Chartered Bank staff to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS.

"It's difficult for me to make a difference in a community but with the good opportunities that we have in this Bank, we can make it happen." - Liliana Parra, Wholesale Banking
