Fighting malaria

A boy with his new mosquito netsMalaria is a significant problem in some of the countries we operate in. In order to reduce and control the incidence of malaria across Africa, we launched Nets for Life in 2006.

Nets for Life is a regional project that evolved after a significant number of Community Project for Africa programmes focused on Malaria. Through this we plan to distribute one million long-lasting insecticide treated nets across 16 countries in Africa by the end of 2008.

On average malaria kills an African child every 30 seconds and costs Africa more than USD12 billion a year through lost GDP. The effective use of bed nets is proven to reduce childhood mortality by up to 35%.

We work closely with governments, regulators and customers to distribute nets to Botswana, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Angola, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique and Namibia.

Standard Chartered has invested USD1 million in Nets for Life. The programme is helping us to strengthen relationships with our stakeholders. It also provides a chance for employee engagement, as our staff are actively involved in distributing the nets and educating people on their proper use and care.

We are delighted to sponsor the Malaria All Party Parliamentary Group- set up in 2004 to raise awareness of malaria amongst Parliamentarians. We contributed to the Group's second report: 'Financing Mechanisms for Malaria', which was launched by Secretary of State Hilary Benn MP in March 2007.
