At Standard Chartered, we've established a governance structure to give us strategic direction and ensure we continue to make progress towards building a sustainable business.
At the top of the structure sits our Sustainability and Responsibility Committee, alongside the Remuneration, Audit and Risk, and Nomination Committees of our Board. It is supported by a Group Sustainability team, along with steering groups for specific programmes and our branches and offices around the world.
The Committee is chaired by Mervyn Davies, our Group Chairman. It meets three times a year to oversee the sustainability agenda at Standard Chartered and is responsible in ensuring the Group's Sustainability aspirations and business activities are aligned and integrated and reflect business priorities and external stakeholder considerations.
Based in London, our Group Sustainability team supports the Committee by talking with stakeholders, monitoring good practice and highlighting potential trends and emerging issues. It also coordinates data collection and is responsible for our annual Sustainability Review and website, taking part in thought leadership events and raising our sustainability profile outside Standard Chartered.
In addition, we have nine steering groups and committees to put our strategy into action by coordinating Group-wide initiatives and making policy recommendations to the Board and its committees.
These steering groups and committees are:
Across the Group, our Country CEOs are responsible for identifying and responding to local sustainability issues. Each business unit must follow globally agreed policies and, where local standards exceed those set by the Group, the higher standard is adopted.
