Global Reporting Initiative

Introduction

Global Reporting Initiative

Standard Chartered Bank uses the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 Guidelines and its supplement for the financial services sector1 to inform our reporting within our Sustainability Review and on our website.

As this is the first time we are reporting using the G3 Guidelines, our initial aim has been to report at a 'B' level.

This index will direct you to where we report against the relevant GRI G3 elements and indicators:

1 Based on 'Revised Supplement for Public Comment'

Reporting Principles

This section demonstrates how we address the GRI Reporting Principles in our reporting.

Scope

Our 2007 Sustainability Review covers all activities performed under Standard Chartered and its majority-owned subsidiaries in the field of sustainability. The report covers the same entities as in our Annual Report. It includes performance data and activities carried out in 2007 (unless stated otherwise within the report) in more than 50 countries where the Bank operates. However, the environmental indicators used in the review are based on limited coverage as disclosed under the relevant headings.

Defining report content

Materiality
We believe it is important to have a robust process in place to determine which information is significant enough to be reported. Using external and internal inputs, we have undertaken an extensive materiality exercise to identify all of the issues relevant to our audiences.

External input
Over the last few years we have gone through an extensive engagement process with stakeholders across our markets to better understand the key risks, impacts and market opportunities we have in promoting sustainable development.

The five themes identified by stakeholders as areas where Standard Chartered could make a significant contribution were:

  • Sustainable finance
  • Tackling financial crime
  • Access to financial services
  • Responsible selling and marketing
  • Protecting the environment

Two further areas were identified as highly important to the business, our employees and our host governments:

  • Our approach to community investment and employee volunteering.
  • Creating a great place to work, including our work on Living with HIV/AIDS, Diversity & Inclusion as well as Health & Safety.

The identification of these seven pillars of a sustainable business resulted in the publication of the document Building a Sustainable Business, which has influenced the Bank's reporting against these seven pillars. We will continue to report on these as we believe they are important issues for our business and the continued engagement of our stakeholders.

Internal input
We have established a governance structure to give us strategic direction and ensure we continue to make progress towards building a sustainable business. The Sustainability and Responsibility Committee, a sub-committee of the board, has a role to challenge current practice, and identify the critical trends, issues and opportunities that we need to address. The Committee is Chaired by Mervyn Davies, the Group Chairman and has the Group Chief Executive and three Non-Executive Directors are members. The committee also oversees delivery against the seven pillars to build a sustainable business.

Stakeholder Inclusiveness
We understand that it is important to look at our business from our stakeholders' perspective and to find areas where our agendas overlap. This means continually listening to and working with stakeholders across the countries where we operate and being very clear about our intentions and priorities.
We continue to learn a lot from external partners and stakeholders, such as investors, governments and NGOs. This year we complemented feedback received year-round with a focused workshop on the way we report our progress against our sustainable business strategy and a workshop on our approach to protecting the environment and Sustainable finance with Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) analysts. We also seek external representation on our Sustainability and Responsibility Committee.

Sustainability Context
We believe that building a sustainable business is an integral part of our long-term strategy to enhance shareholder value. Our reporting demonstrates that sustainability is integrated with our business strategy including our risk management, governance and engagement processes.

Completeness
We report on all significant sustainability impacts that fall within the boundary of our operational control as well as areas that are beyond our direct control, but where we have influence.

Reporting principles for defining quality

Balance
Our materiality approach encompasses those issues that are both positive and challenging to help ensure that Standard Chartered's reporting presents a balanced perspective on our sustainability performance.

Comparability
We have a consistent structure for reporting and publish data over three years to enable comparability as well as providing additional information relevant to the interpretation of this data.

Timelines
Standard Chartered has consistently reported on environmental performance annually since 2001, corporate responsibility since 2004 and sustainability since 2006. Our Sustainability Review is published annually, and where appropriate our website is updated throughout the year.

Clarity
To provide clarity, our Sustainability Review is written and laid out in a way that enables it to be understood by a range of readers. It contains the level of information requested by our stakeholders by being succinct and focusing on the sever pillars of building a sustainable business whilst putting additional information on the website.
We also recognise the importance and are committed to providing websites that are accessible to all user groups, including the disabled. This commitment is a natural extension of our global community programme, Seeing is Believing, which aims to make a difference in the lives of ten million people by 2010 which will include preventative medicine and cataract operations to address avoidable blindness. It is also compliant with our obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act.
We publish over 1000 web pages. Ensuring that all these pages are accessible to all user groups is an essential task. It's also part of our commitment to Corporate Responsibility. Our approach is to ensure the minimum web accessibility requirements on all new content on our website. We used the W3C guidelines as our benchmark.

Accuracy & Reliability
Our reports need to be accurate to enable readers to make judgements based upon its disclosures. Information and processes used in the preparation of our Sustainability Review have been gathered, recorded, compiled, analysed and disclosed in a way that could be subject to examination and that establish the quality and materiality of the information.
While we engage with external agencies on improving our approach and delivery, we currently do not use an external body to audit our processes or data. We have a system of internal controls in place, including an internal audit function, as part of our process for managing and reporting information. These internal systems are important to the overall accuracy, integrity and credibility of our reporting.
