Standard Chartered first opened its doors to the public in Tanzania in 1917 and, following a period of nationalisation, re-opened again in 1993, as the first foreign bank to obtain a licence under the economic reform programme. We now have six branches countrywide, three in Dar es Salaam, and one each in Mwanza, Arusha and Moshi.

Our Customers

In Tanzania, Standard Chartered has built up a base of more than 17,000 customers, and we aim to offer innovative products and excellent service, which compete with the best in the world.
Our Consumer business focuses on upscaling individuals and their businesses. We have expanded our range of products and services, to include Import and Export Finance, Structured Trade solutions, and foreign exchange risk management.

Standard Chartered has built up a significant capital base and developed a strong Client Relationships business, establishing relationships with major international corporations, local businesses, donor agencies, government and parastatal organisations. We are now looking to further develop our business with the mining, agriculture and large trader sectors.

Innovative Products & Services

Some examples of the innovative products and services that we have launched in Tanzania include:

  • The Supply Chain Finance Product introduced in February 2007.
  • The SME Express Trade product and the International Trade Account to cater for the SME sector introduced in the last quarter of 2006.
  • The Tajirika Savings Account introduced in May 2006, geared towards enhancing the savings culture.
  • The Visa Electron Debit Cards introduced in April 2004.
  • Web Banking Services for Corporate Customers (mid 2000).
  • Reuters Money 2000. This enables us to provide our customers with timely international financial information to assist with managing their foreign currency exposure.
  • Excel Banking, which enables our high net-worth customers to experience personalised, convenient banking in a relaxed environment.

Dealing in FX Swaps, FX forwards and Options and Derivatives.

Standard Chartered is investing in world class technology:

  • Our branch network in Tanzania is fully computerised and all branches are satellite-linked and real-time, eliminating the need for our customers to go to their home branches to transact business. Customers can also transmit money around the country in a faster and secure manner.
  • We were the first bank to introduce Automated Teller Machines (ATM) in Tanzania (mid-1997). We have equipped all our branches with ATMs, which have VISA connectivity. This enables us to offer 24-hour banking to our customers, and also facilitates cheque deposits.
  • We were the first bank to introduce Electronic Banking Services.

With more than 300 employees, Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania Ltd. has always placed great emphasis on training and development to ensure high levels of service to our customers, through quality career planning and skills enhancement for our staff. We have sent staff to Gambia, Kenya, Ghana, Botswana, Dubai and London for training.

More than Banking

  • Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania Ltd. recognises it has wider responsibilities to the country.  For a number of years we have participated in a number of community projects and have spent over USD 350,000 from 2002.  Examples include:
  • Over USD 40,000 spent on the renovation of the Kurasini Orphaned Children’s Home in Dar es Salaam.
  • In 2003, the Bank donated over USD 110,000 towards water projects in various regions of the country. Hundreds of thousands of people in the recipient areas currently have access to clean water. The number of children going to school especially the Girl Child has increased significantly. The Bank also facilitated the implementation of a project for ex-commercial sex workers. Through a fish farming project sponsored by the Bank, the women currently have alternative ways to generate income.
  • In 2004 the Bank ventured into projects geared towards enhancing food production through irrigation. Over USD 60,000 was spent on the irrigation projects, and hundreds of households currently have access to ample food and surpluses for trade. Health levels have improved and child mortality rates reduced.
  • In 2005, a Home for Children orphaned by HIV/AIDS was constructed through a donation from the Bank, which donated USD 140,000 towards this initiative.
  • Standard Chartered Bank supports the annual FAO Telefood event initiative which is geared towards the provision of relief food to refugees and other impoverished communities in Tanzania.
  • +SCBT has partnered with local associations such as the Commission for AIDS (TACAIDS) and ABCT and international organisations such as the Global Health Initiative to spread the awareness on HIV/AIDS.

SCBT has also been active in the Group’s SIB initiative and has raised funds to restore eye-sight through various events such as Local SIB Charity Walks and the Follow the Sun Walk in 2005.
