Standard Chartered Bank's history in the United States dates back to 1902 when the Chartered Bank opened its first office in the US. The Standard Bank of South Africa opened an agency in 1905, later merging with the African Banking Corporation's office in 1920 and the office of the Bank of British West Africa in 1923. These two agencies progressed together, with the Chartered Bank gaining the first branch license to be issued to a foreign bank in New York, from the New York State Banking Department. When the Chartered Bank and Standard Bank Groups merged in 1969, the New York office of both banks amalgamated and the new office of Standard Chartered opened at 160 Water Street.
Today Standard Chartered Bank is located in New York City and is a recognized emerging markets bank offering specialized banking products in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America to US based multi-national corporations and institutions.
