Standard Chartered Bank Zambia Plc has been operating in Zambia since 1906, and we have consistently provided world-class solutions to our customers. Today, we continue to lead the way and have remained the leading international bank, with over 400 employees across our network of 15 branches. We are well established in growth markets, and we aim to be the right partner for our customers.
We celebrated 100 years of doing business in Zambia in 2006 with unprecedented growth and record profits. The Bank controls about 20% of the market in Zambia and offers both Consumer and Wholesale banking products and services. We have remained the pace-setter in innovative banking, offering products ranging from personal banking to structured trade products such as trade finance and cash management. We have also deepened our focus on agriculture through a new agribusiness unit.
Review of Operations
Consumer Banking
Our Consumer Banking offerings include transactional account services, debit cards, personal and business instalment loans and wealth management products through our branch network across the country. We were the first bank to introduce ATMs, Visa Electron Debit Cards, Excel Centres, Platinum Visa Cards and many other innovative products such as Express Trade for SME customers and medical insurance on saving accounts. Our mortgage facility is the most desirable in the country, offering customers the highest maximum limits.
Wholesale Banking
Our Wholesale Banking services offer corporate and institutional customers comprehensive banking solutions, with a particular emphasis on relationship banking. Customers can access products in the areas of Lending, Trade Finance, Cash Management, and Treasury. The offering also includes cross border payments, which are all supported by electronic funds transfer, reporting and cash management services.
Global Markets also provides world-class treasury solutions including derivative products, and advice on currency, interest rates and risk management. We continue to lead the way with many firsts in the market including FX Options and Hedging Products.
Community Social Responsibility
Standard Chartered Bank continues to make a difference in the Zambian communities. Through the Group’s “Community Partnership for Africa” programme, we provide financial
support to a wide range of community projects which change lives and make a meaningful difference in the communities where we live and work.
We launched “Nets For Life” in Lusaka on Africa Malaria Day in April 2006. This exciting initiative, which was later rolled out in Uganda, Kenya, Ghana and Tanzania, involved the distribution of free Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets to vulnerable people in several communities across Africa.
We are proud of our Youth Lifeskills Development Programme, which has impacted over 20,000 students in 42 high schools in Lusaka and the Copperbelt, and our “Seeing is Believing” programme, for which our staff have been raising funds to pay for sight restoration for Zambians suffering from curable blindness.
We also remain a leader in promoting HIV/AIDS awareness and treatment among our employees and the general public. Under our “Living with HIV” programme, we are providing ARVs to our employees, their spouses and children.
